An RO gives you clean drinking water at one tap; a softener protects your whole home from scale. They work best together — softened water upstream reduces scaling on the RO membrane so it lasts longer. Many customers add the RO to a Value, Superior or Chlor-A-Soft softener.
RO water is exceptionally pure but slightly acidic and low in minerals, which some people find tastes "flat." For +$25 you can swap the final carbon stage for our pH Booster — Excalibur's neutralizing filter. It adds back essential minerals like calcium and magnesium, brings the pH to just above neutral and puts back about 1–3 grains of hardness. That returns flat RO water to the mineral profile baristas prize — ideal for coffee, espresso and tea, where remineralized water gives cleaner, more even extraction (and it's gentler on espresso machines than zero-mineral RO water). Just pick it when you book.
Pre-filters and the carbon post-filter are typically replaced about every 6 months, and the RO membrane about every 18 months. We can handle replacements or supply the cartridges for DIY.
